I want to start with a bizarre case of foreshadowing. A few months before I discovered a nodule on my thyroid, my girlfriend bought me a book entitled "The Last Lecture" by Randy Pausch. She thought I would like this book because it was written by a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon University. In his book, Pausch gives advice on many aspects of life, mostly related to being a computer science professor (maybe something I will achieve one day). The heartbreaking part is that, before writing this book, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and was told he had a few months to live. I enjoyed the book very much and began following Pausch's progress with fighting cancer through his web site. Then, near the end of July 2008, a friend of his posted a message saying Pausch had died. Two months later I discovered my nodule and ultimately I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Luckily for me, my disease is not as serious.
Round 2 of my surgery to remove the other side of my thyroid is in 12 days.
