Silly

I was visiting Mt. Maganui in New Zealand last year around the end of November. I was there with one of my PhD supervisors. One night, after dinner, we decided to go for a walk down the main street. Everything was going well until I noticed a blue Ford Focus driving down the street, which looked exactly like our rental car. I noted the licence plate number, and to my disbelief it was the same as on our rental car! I took off in pursuit of the stolen car, and left my supervisor wondering what just happened. About two blocks down the street, I remembered that our rental car's licence plate number was written on the key chain. I pulled out the keys and checked the numbers. They were all the same except for the last one which was '7' in my case but '8' in the other. Anyway, I walked back to my supervisor feeling relieved and embarrassed at the same time. I felt very silly explaining to her why I suddenly ran off.

The only thing which tops that story is when, a couple weeks before discovering a lump on my thyroid, I asked myself "Why did they [Australian Immigration] force me to pay $900 for health insurance before coming here? I don't even need it".
