Near the end of September 2008, I was at the gym doing some exercises in front of a mirror (as one normally does :)). I noticed a small lump on the front righthand side of my neck, and I asked myself "is that supposed to be there?". I immediately scheduled an appointment with my GP, and went in to see her one week later. The short answer is "no".
An ultrasound revelaved a 1.8cm (in diameter) nodule on my thyroid, which is the lump that I spotted earlier. Two days later, I underwent a fine needle point aspiration procedure to take a sample of cells from the nodule. The pathologist performed a biopsy and found "atypical cell patterns"; she recommended removal of the nodule for a histiology.
I had the nodule removed two weeks ago, and yesterday I found out that I have papillary carcinoma. This is the most common type of thyroid cancer, with an excellent survival rate. Still, this is quite a shock because there is less than 5% chance of a nodule being malignant. Damn bad luck!
The point of this blog is to record the events in my recovery, and possibly, to help me answer questions along the way.
